Recently, Novonesis was established through the merger of Denmark’s Chr Hansen and Novozymes, creating a €3.7bn biosolutions powerhouse. The focus of Novonesis is to harness the potential of biosolutions to drive innovation and growth in the food and beverage industry.

With the merger complete, former clients of Novozymes and Chr Hansen are eager to understand how this union will impact the companies’ portfolios. One key question is what the food and beverage strategy will look like for Novonesis moving forward.

Leading the new Food & Beverages division at Novonesis is Jacob Vishof Paulsen, who previously headed up the food and beverage ingredients businesses at Novozymes and Chr Hansen. The majority of the sales in the portfolio come from Chr Hansen’s ingredients, which likely played a role in Paulsen being selected for this position.

Paulsen’s extensive experience in the food and beverage industry, including leadership roles at Chr Hansen, positions him well to drive success in the newly formed division. The focus is on extending shelf-life, improving nutrition, and enhancing taste and texture in various food categories.

One of the main challenges for a merged business is ensuring continuity for existing clients. Paulsen prioritized maintaining relationships with customers from both legacy companies, resulting in successful transitions and strong client relations.

As a larger player in the industry now, Novonesis is better equipped to navigate supply chain disruptions and geopolitical challenges. The company’s broad portfolio covers core products in categories like dairy, bread, beverages, and meat, positioning them for continued growth and stability.

The merger between Chr Hansen and Novozymes brings together complementary technologies, such as probiotics and enzymes, allowing Novonesis to offer a comprehensive range of ingredients to the food and beverage market. This positions them as a leading player in the industry, reaching two billion consumers daily.

Looking ahead, Novonesis aims to respond to trends like gut health and sustainability in the food and beverage sector. Investments in probiotics and innovations in dairy-free alternatives reflect the company’s commitment to meeting evolving consumer demands.

In terms of future strategies, Novonesis plans to focus on organic growth and innovation in key categories like dairy, bakery, and beverage. Acquisitions are unlikely, as the company aims to invest internally in applications, talent, and competencies to drive continued success in the food and beverage industry.
