The food and beverage industry is constantly evolving, with trends and innovations shaping the way we produce, distribute, and market our products. One area of concern for manufacturers of plant-based meat products is ensuring that their offerings contain essential nutrients, such as vitamin B12, which is typically found in animal products.

Vitamin B12 is an important part of a healthy diet, and a deficiency can lead to symptoms such as tiredness, vision problems, and muscle weakness. Traditionally, B12 is found in meat, eggs, and dairy products. However, some plant-based meat companies have found ways to incorporate this essential nutrient into their products.

For instance, JBS-owned Vivera adds B12 to their plant-based shawarma kebab using a pre-mix, ensuring an even distribution throughout their products. Similarly, Bobeldijk includes B12 in their vegan burgers and fish fillets through the use of a vitamin premix. Both companies aim to provide consumers with 15% of their daily recommended intake of B12 per 100g of their products.

However, it’s important to note that the B12 found in plant-based meat products may be slightly different from that found in animal products. Vivera uses a regulated amount of B12 to avoid overdosing, as many consumers who follow a vegan diet already supplement their B12 intake. Bobeldijk, on the other hand, uses cyanocobalamin, a different form of B12 commonly found in fortified foods and supplements.

While some plant-based products, such as dried seaweed and algae, may contain B12, the body may not absorb them properly due to their inactive variant. Therefore, it is recommended that vegans take a B12 supplement or consume products with added vitamin B12 to ensure sufficient intake. Ultimately, the importance of B12 to one’s health cannot be understated.

In the ever-changing landscape of the food and beverage industry, manufacturers of plant-based meat products are working diligently to provide consumers with nutritious alternatives. By incorporating B12 into their products, these companies are addressing the potential nutrient deficiency that some individuals may experience when following a plant-based diet.

Overall, it is crucial for manufacturers to stay ahead of industry trends, embrace innovative food processing technologies, adhere to regulations, and consider sustainable practices in order to meet the evolving demands of consumers. Ensuring that plant-based meat products contain essential nutrients, such as B12, is just one way that companies are driving growth and catering to the needs of health-conscious consumers in today’s market.
