Sainsbury’s has announced the launch of its updated Taste the Difference beef range, which aims to reduce carbon emissions and provide high-quality products for customers. The range is the result of a decade of development, bringing together the retailer’s dairy and beef supply chains to implement measures such as strict monitoring of feed and living conditions for the cattle. These practices enable healthy calves to be raised in an efficient manner, requiring less time and energy to grow and emitting fewer harmful gases.

The initial range will include popular items like 12% and 5% fat mince, 30-day rib eye steak, and a 30-day beef roasting joint. The beef is produced in Britain using Aberdeen Angus cattle, known for their suitability to a grass and forage diet. This breed allows for the production of more consistent beef with a rich flavor and exquisite tenderness, according to Sainsbury’s.

In addition to benefiting consumers, Sainsbury’s has ensured that the new process provides advantages for farmers. Fixed, forward pricing offers greater security and stability, and the retailer equips farms with advanced technology at no cost to generate detailed data for improved farm management decisions.

The updated beef range is available in over 60 stores, with plans for a nationwide expansion. Gavin Hodgson, Director of Agriculture, Aquaculture, and Horticulture at Sainsbury’s, expressed excitement about the possibilities this move could hold for the future of farming in the UK. He highlighted the lower carbon footprint of the premium beef range, which not only tastes great but also supports farmers and the growth of UK agriculture.

Working closely with its long-standing supplier and beef processor, ABP Food Group, Sainsbury’s has created a beef range that emits 25% lower carbon emissions. This aligns with Sainsbury’s goal of becoming Net Zero across its own operations by 2035 and its value chain by 2050, in line with the Paris Agreement’s aim of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5C.

The launch of this lower emission beef range was praised by UK food charity WRAP. With over a third of UK greenhouse gases coming from food, and 30% from agriculture, efforts to lower the carbon intensity of food are crucial to achieving the country’s Net Zero goals. Beef, in particular, has the highest average carbon footprint per kilo among proteins, making it an important target for emissions reduction. WRAP commended Sainsbury’s for taking steps towards producing lower emission Taste the Difference beef lines, which contribute to the overall roadmap the industry must follow.

The range aims to reduce carbon emissions through superior cattle breeding and efficient animal management, resulting in healthier calves that require less time and energy to grow while emitting fewer harmful gases.

Featuring popular cuts like mince, steak, and roasting joint, the beef is sourced from Aberdeen Angus cattle in Britain. These animals are naturally suited to a grass and forage diet, producing high-quality beef with consistent flavor and tenderness.

In addition to benefiting customers, Sainsbury’s ensures advantages for farmers, offering fixed, forward pricing for greater security and stability. Moreover, the retailer equips farms with advanced technology at no cost, providing in-depth data to assist with farm management decisions.
