The food and beverage industry is constantly evolving, with trends in food manufacturing, processing technology, distribution, innovation, sustainability, regulations, packaging, marketing, and consumer preferences shaping the landscape. One key issue that continues to challenge the industry is the sustainability of packaging materials and the management of litter.

Despite the success of recycling regimes in promoting sustainable disposal practices among consumers, litter remains a significant problem. However, Spanish start-up Pack2Earth is aiming to address this issue with its innovative biobased packaging solutions that compost naturally at ambient temperatures, leaving little trace.

The company’s flexible film, made from biopolyesters and cellulose, and injection material, composed of PHA plastic and mineral additives, break down in a matter of months, unlike traditional litter that can linger for centuries. Co-founders Françoise de Valera and Glenn Du Pree were inspired to create these materials after witnessing packaging litter in the countryside while out trail running.

Pack2Earth’s products have the added benefit of not leaving any toxins in the soil during the composting process, ensuring a sustainable end result. Additionally, the materials can help reduce landfill waste by enabling the composting of food-contaminated products that may not be suitable for traditional recycling.

What sets Pack2Earth apart from other biobased plastics on the market is its ability to offer long shelf lives for semi-liquid and liquid products, making it a versatile and sustainable option for a wide range of applications. The company’s licensing model allows larger manufacturers to scale up production with ease, attracting investments from multinational companies like MondelÄ“z International.

In addition to its environmental benefits, Pack2Earth’s materials also offer practical advantages, such as the ability to be reused multiple times, making them a sustainable choice for businesses looking to reduce their environmental impact. While the materials do have some limitations, such as the inability to withstand pasteurization or produce thermal molding trays, ongoing development efforts aim to address these challenges.

As the food and beverage industry continues to focus on sustainability and innovation, solutions like Pack2Earth’s biobased packaging play a crucial role in driving positive change. By providing environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional packaging materials, companies can not only reduce their environmental footprint but also meet the changing demands of consumers and regulatory requirements in a rapidly evolving market.
