Damm UK has introduced “Old Speckled Hen” ZERO, an alcohol-free addition to the recently acquired “Old Speckled Hen” brand family. The launch responds to changing consumer preferences and the continued expansion of the no- and low-alcohol drinks market.
Developed for the growing number of consumers choosing 0% ABV products, the new ale also reflects the rise of “zebra-striping”—the practice of alternating between full-strength alcoholic drinks and no- or low-alcohol alternatives. “Old Speckled Hen” ZERO delivers the brand’s familiar malt-led character, complemented by caramel and fruity notes. It is made to retain the flavour profile of the original ale without the alcohol and contains only 12kcal per 100ml.
The latest figures from the British Beer and Pub Association demonstrate the strength of this category. In 2025, sales of no- and low-alcohol beer reached a record 200 million pints, representing almost 3% of the UK beer market. Research published by Drinkaware through its 2026 Drinkaware Monitor also shows that moderation is becoming increasingly mainstream. The annual survey of UK adults found that 91% of drinkers are now limiting their alcohol consumption, up from 87% in 2025.
Luke White, managing director of Damm UK comments, “We know that consumer drinking behaviour is now tailored around occasions and the launch of ‘Old Speckled Hen’ ZERO reflects that. Whatever the reason for moderating, we believe that this 0.0% traditional ale is going to become a national favourite.”
“Old Speckled Hen” ZERO is initially available in a 4x440ml can multipack at selected Morrisons stores and through morrisons.com. Cans and 500ml bottles will reach Asda stores and its online channel later this month. The product will also be introduced shortly in Greene King pubs nationwide, alongside other hospitality venues.
Damm UK acquired the “Old Speckled Hen” brand family from Greene King in July. The deal returns the Damm Eagle Brewery to its British beer and ale heritage while reinforcing Damm’s position as the UK’s largest independent brewer during its 150th anniversary year.
As the first significant product development following the acquisition, “Old Speckled Hen” ZERO demonstrates Damm’s intention to support the brand’s long-term growth and maintain its relevance among modern consumers. The launch also reflects wider food and beverage industry trends, including food and drink consumer trends, food and drink industry innovation, and changing expectations around food and drink sustainability, food and drink regulations, food and drink packaging, and food and drink marketing. Alongside broader food manufacturing trends, food processing technology and food distribution trends, these developments continue to influence how brands create, produce and bring products to market.
