If the proposals move forward, the majority of cheese packing operations currently at the Kirkby site will be transitioned to SDUK’s established Nuneaton facility. This site recently benefited from significant investment aimed at enhancing food manufacturing trends.

The dairy manufacturer asserts that, if the Kirkby facility closes, new roles will emerge at the Nuneaton location. As of this moment, no final decisions have been reached, and consultations with employees regarding this proposal are set to commence shortly.

Dedicated to cheese production

A company spokesperson stated: “We remain committed to producing cheese in Hawes, and both the Wensleydale Creamery and our onsite Visitor Centre will continue to operate as usual. This proposal has no impact on our supplying farms.

“Proposals that have the potential to impact employees are never considered lightly. We believe that relocating this operation is right for the long-term future of the business as we maintain our efforts to pursue further efficiencies, reduce costs, and manufacture products of the highest quality.

“SDUK will ensure the support of all employees who may be affected by these proposed changes.”

Additionally, Saputo has also proposed the closure of its Frome factory in Somerset, further consolidating production at the Nuneaton site in response to evolving food distribution trends.

Saputo’s history in Yorkshire

The Canadian food group, Saputo, acquired the Yorkshire-based Wensleydale Dairy Products in a deal valued at £23m in 2021. This acquisition included the cheese maker’s two facilities in Hawes and Kirkby Malzeard, employing approximately 210 staff collectively.

Saputo began establishing its presence in the UK food and beverage industry after acquiring Dairy Crest in 2019 for £975m. That same year, in addition to Wensleydale Dairy Products, the Canadian firm also acquired the vegan cheese maker Bute Island Foods for an undisclosed amount, showcasing food and drink industry innovation.
