Delfort recently unveiled a thin barrier 302 specialty paper that offers robust protection for ice cream, chocolates, candies, and other temperature-sensitive products.
To enhance the efficiency of its cold-sealable papers, Delfort collaborated with Henkel to identify the ideal cold seal coating solution.
This innovative paper boasts outstanding barrier properties, including moisture, oxygen, aroma, and fat resistance. According to Delfort, brands can now rely on a paper packaging solution that maintains product freshness and integrity. Positioning this paper as a modern alternative to traditional materials effectively aligns with current consumer preferences and industry trends.
Optimally paired with compatible cold seal coatings from Henkel, this paper ensures comprehensive protection against external elements, thus preserving the taste, appearance, and texture of food products.
Despite its lightweight construction, the paper exhibits remarkable strength and flex-crack resistance, enabling it to withstand the rigors of handling and transportation. Additionally, it is free from intentionally added PFAS and is recyclable under the CEPI method, thereby merging high functionality with eco-friendliness.
Furthermore, the paper boasts a low moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) of less than 10, measured at 23°C and 85% humidity. This characteristic effectively prevents moisture from penetrating the packaging, keeping products dry and preserving their texture and quality. Particularly for ice cream bars, the paper mitigates freezer burn, which can adversely affect texture and flavor. Its specially designed barrier ensures that frozen foods remain intact and do not dry out over time.
The low MVTR is equally crucial for non-frozen products such as powdered foods, dry snacks, and baked goods, which are sensitive to changes in humidity.
With a low oxygen transmission rate (OTR) value of less than 30, this barrier paper significantly restricts oxygen ingress, which is vital for preserving chocolates and nuts. This feature prevents rancidity while maintaining flavor and nutritional value. For non-frozen goods, a low OTR is essential for preserving the natural aroma of products, ensuring a top-notch sensory experience for premium confectionery and snacks.
Additionally, the paper is engineered to withstand packaging and handling demands, ensuring it remains tear-resistant and secure throughout production and delivery. The release coating atop the cold seal layer further prevents the paper from sticking to itself during storage or processing. This characteristic provides ease of handling, consequently ensuring smooth operations on packaging lines. The combination of durability and non-blocking performance supplies both reliability and convenience, safeguarding products at every stage.
“Delfort’s barrier paper was optimally designed with a paper surface that makes it compatible with a range of cold seals from Henkel, each tailored for specific requirements of relevant flow pack structures,” explained Dr. Freddy E. Boscán, General Manager of PD Innovation Flexible Coatings at Henkel. “These cold seals promote circularity by being certified as recycling-compatible and enable sustainable packaging solutions that align with the industry’s shift towards a closed-loop economy.”
