“Current dairy alternatives have a problem,” states Anik Thaler, co-founder and CEO of the plant-based brand Fabas Foods.

Since its rise to prominence in the early 2000s, alternative dairy has faced scrutiny due to unsustainable practices. Raw ingredients often travel thousands of miles to reach producers, raising concerns about the environmental impact. Additionally, there are links to ultra-processing methods. However, Fabas Foods, a female-led initiative, presents a strategic solution: pulses.

“At Fabas, it’s all about beans and peas,” remarks Thaler. “We are dedicated to using the power of pulses to transform the way we eat, delivering bean-based ingredients that are as beneficial for the planet as they are for people.”

This innovative Swiss start-up has developed a yogurt pre-mix that manufacturers can utilize similarly to dairy milk.

“The yogurt pre-mix consists of a liquid component made of gently processed faba bean extract, oil, and our selected plant-based starter culture,” explains Thaler.

In addressing environmental challenges, Fabas Foods prioritizes sustainably sourced ingredients and actively supports farmers.

“We thrive on partnerships and collaboration,” Thaler emphasizes. “By working closely with farmers and partners, we foster robust relationships that drive mutual success and contribute to a more sustainable agriculture and food industry.”

Furthermore, innovation remains at the forefront of Fabas Foods’ agenda, propelling the industry forward while planning for the future.

“We believe in combining tradition and innovation. While pulses have long been a staple in diets worldwide, our focus on innovation allows us to transform these incredible plants into versatile ingredients.”

This approach comes at a critical moment, as awareness of the health benefits associated with pulses is rapidly increasing their popularity.

“Pulses are wonder foods for both human and environmental health,” asserts a representative from the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO). “They provide a vital and generally inexpensive source of protein. Rich in vitamins and minerals, they can help prevent diseases like diabetes and coronary conditions. Environmentally, pulses enhance soil health, many are drought-resistant, climate-resilient, and their genetic diversity enables adaptation to climate changes.”
