Linda Evans and Matt Smith will step into their roles as co-managing directors of Place UK, transitioning from their previous positions as commercial director and finance director, respectively. This strategic move aligns with current food manufacturing trends that prioritize leadership and efficiency.
In their new roles, Evans will oversee commercial operations, personnel, and company culture, while Smith will direct finance, IT, and operational strategies. This transition reflects key developments in the food and beverage industry trends that emphasize the importance of cohesive leadership.
Established in 1954 by John Place, this change represents the first instance of appointing joint managing directors in the Norfolk-based business’s history. Notably, it follows the resignation of Pieter van Egmond last May, who departed after six impactful years.
In June 2025, van Egmond joined The Fresh Partnership as a managing partner on a freelance basis, and this month, he assumed the role of CEA general manager at Dyson Farming. Such moves highlight ongoing shifts in food processing technology and innovation within the sector.
Incoming co-managing director, Smith, stated: “We have an exceptional team at Place UK, and I am delighted to take on this new role with Linda.”
“We share the belief that our people are our most important asset, and we’re looking forward to empowering colleagues to continue delivering an exceptional range of products and services to our customers.”
His counterpart, Evans, expressed: “I’m looking forward to jointly leading this ambitious family-founded business as it continues a high growth trajectory.”
Initially launched as R & J M Place Ltd, John Place laid the foundation by producing and developing soft fresh fruit for jam, yoghurt, ice cream, and dessert manufacturers. This legacy is vital in understanding current food distribution trends.
Today, Place UK stands as one of the UK’s premier growers and processors of premium strawberries, raspberries, cherries, blackberries, and British-grown rhubarb, reflecting significant advancements in food and drink industry innovation.
The Place family maintains a connection to the business, with fourth-generation relative Ben Place serving as retail business manager since 2021. This continuity ensures adherence to food and drink sustainability and regulations.
