The manufacturer has initiated a consultation process concerning a proposal to decrease headcount across multiple departments at Tittle Bakery. Reports indicate that 131 positions may be at risk of redundancy.
A spokesman from the company stated that plans to reduce staff numbers are in response to a ‘comprehensive’ review of cold pie volume, highlighting the need for operational adjustments.
“This is due to changing demand in a competitive trading environment and to ensure we can continue to support the long-term sustainable future of roles at the site,” the spokesman added.
Consultation with Employees
“We will be working closely with all our employees to support them over the coming weeks, as well as meeting colleagues affected on an individual basis to offer practical support and advice through this period.”
The Compleat Food Group emerged from the merger between Addo Food Group and Winterbotham Darby in January 2021. Following this merger, Compleat has expanded its operations through various strategic acquisitions.
Among these acquisitions, the Crewe-based Wrights Food Group, a manufacturer of savoury bakery items, sweet pastries, and ready meals, was integrated in the same year as the merger.
Acquisition Strategy
In October 2023, Compleat enhanced its portfolio by acquiring plant-based cheese maker Palace Culture for an undisclosed amount, further strengthening its existing plant-based offerings, which include the meat-alternative brand Squeaky Bean and the chilled pickles and ferments brand Vadasz.
The previous year proved to be pivotal for the company, marked by notable mergers and acquisitions. February saw the dual acquisitions of SK Foods and Zorba Food, followed by the purchase of Harvey & Brockless in September.
In contrast, supermarket chain Morrisons recently decided against closing its Rathbones bakery site, thereby preserving 138 jobs.
Morrisons plans to maintain operations at a reduced capacity and shift away from bread production, focusing instead on fewer, more specialized bakery products. Nonetheless, 270 employees have already opted for a voluntary redundancy package.
