A recent study conducted by market research firm IPSOS and Tetra Pak’s Index 2023 reveals a significant shift in consumer eating habits towards sustainability. Aptly coined ‘climatarians’ by Tetra Pak, these consumers are taking steps to ensure their diets have a positive impact on the environment. The research surveyed consumers in ten countries – Brazil, China, Germany, India, Kenya, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, the UK, and the USA – and found that 70% of respondents firmly believe that healthy products should not harm the environment. Additionally, 54% of consumers expressed their willingness to take responsibility for contributing to planetary well-being through their dietary choices.

Moreover, consumers displayed concerns on specific sustainability issues, with 38% stating that food waste is a major worry. While embracing technology as a potential solution for sustainable food consumption, 62% of respondents expressed optimism about its ability to shape a more sustainable future. However, some consumers remain skeptical about the freshness and process-driven nature of technologically innovated food items.

In addition to sustainability, health plays an increasingly significant role in consumer decision-making. Over 70% of those surveyed prioritize healthy products over convenience, even in the face of rising costs. Although 60% of respondents feared limited access to nutritious food due to economic constraints, only a mere 17% considered sacrificing the health benefits of food and drink products.

Interestingly, many respondents viewed health and sustainability as intertwined concepts. About 50% of participants believe that if food or drink is deemed unhealthy for individuals, it is also unsustainable for the planet. Furthermore, 67% of consumers associate environmental issues with their own well-being.

Commenting on the findings, Adolfo Orive, President and CEO of Tetra Pak, expressed the company’s commitment to decarbonizing the food industry and creating more resilient and sustainable food systems. Orive highlights the significance of optimizing value chains through innovations in sourcing, packaging, processing, and distribution to meet increasing global nutritional needs, emphasizing Tetra Pak’s dedication to collaborating with customers and suppliers in this pursuit.

As food tech advancements hold immense potential, Orive acknowledges the uncertainty regarding the extent and timing of their success. He stresses the importance of continued efforts and collaborative exploration to find solutions for the challenges facing the current food system.
