Major chocolate companies support EU law against deforestation Ferrero, Mars, Nestlé Food and Beverage Business

The chocolate heavyweights Nestlé, Mars, and Ferrero have expressed their support for the EU’s upcoming ban on imported goods linked to deforestation. According to a report by Reuters, these companies have endorsed the move, which aims to minimize the risk of deforestation associated with cocoa and chocolate products entering the EU market.

The European Commission proposed the deforestation rules in 2021 as part of the European Green Deal, a comprehensive environmental initiative. This draft law aligns with the international commitment made at the COP26 summit to end deforestation by 2030.

In response to the proposed regulation, Nestlé stated, “Thanks to our long-standing efforts to avoid deforestation, we are confident in our ability to comply with this regulation. However, we seek more clarity on the practical aspects of implementation, especially at the member state level.”

The companies’ endorsement signifies a significant step forward in transforming the cocoa and chocolate sector to promote sustainability. The regulation will require companies selling cocoa, coffee, palm oil, and other products in the EU to verify that their supply chains do not contribute to deforestation.

While the new law has faced opposition from some quarters, including the US government and certain countries in South East Asia, the EU remains steadfast in its commitment to implementing the policy without delay.
