Austrian dairy producer Berglandmilch is holding talks with fellow co-operative Obersteirische Molkerei about a potential “merger”.
A representative of Berglandmilch, Austria’s biggest dairy company, confirmed that “discussions” are under way but provided no additional details.
Berglandmilch employs approximately 1,500 people and sells dairy products through brands including Schärdinger, Desserta and Tirol Milch.
The co-operative is supplied by 8,000 farmers and recorded revenue of €1.3bn ($1.6bn) in 2024. Its manufacturing network comprises nine processing facilities.
Obersteirische Molkerei is also structured as a co-operative. It operates three dairy plants, located in Knittelfeld, Spielberg and Kapfenberg.
The business employs more than 600 people and reported 2024 revenue of €374m, according to information published on its website.
In July, Berglandmilch announced investment plans designed to expand production and capitalise on “rapidly growing” segments of Austria’s dairy market.
The company is currently adding capacity at its Aschbach facility in northern Austria.
Construction has begun on the expansion, which is scheduled for completion by January. Once operational, the site is expected to produce 15,000 tons of quark and 7,000 tons of cream cheese annually.
