Kaffe Bueno, a Denmark-based company, has introduced a biorefinery in Rødovre to address the wastage of coffee grounds. Currently, only 1% of the coffee’s nutrients are utilized when we brew a cup of coffee, while the rest end up as waste. This contributes to the release of harmful greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane. The biorefinery, backed by €2.5 million from the European Innovation Council, aims to upcycle 500 tons of coffee grounds annually and transform them into food and cosmetic products. Juan Pablo Medina, the CEO and Co-Founder of Kaffe Bueno, mentioned that the portfolio of food ingredients includes antioxidants, prebiotic fiber, clean-label caramel colors, structured fats/emulsifiers, and encapsulation agents for bioactives and probiotics.

Not only does the biorefinery create valuable products, but it also effectively reduces emissions. If coffee grounds are not upcycled, they typically release methane, which is a highly potent greenhouse gas. However, Kaffe Bueno’s innovative green chemistry and biotechnology prevent this emission from occurring. Medina emphasized that their solution not only curbs coffee disposal emissions but also reduces the emissions associated with the ingredients they replace in their customer’s formulations. This approach makes their ingredients more sustainable than current alternatives, contributing to an 80% reduction in emissions.

Although the biorefinery in Denmark has just launched, Kaffe Bueno has plans for expansion. They aim to establish additional biorefineries in countries like Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, and South America, thanks to the availability of spent coffee worldwide. The next commercial biorefinery is expected to have a production capacity of at least 15,000 tons. The decision for the location of the next biorefinery will depend on various factors and will be made next year.
