Rohan Godhania, a 16-year-old from London, tragically passed away after consuming a protein shake on August 15, 2020. It was later discovered that he had a rare disorder called ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency, which prevents the breakdown of ammonia in the body. This condition can be triggered by a high protein intake, such as the protein shake Rohan consumed from Ultimate Sports Nutrition (USN) protein powder. His family is now advocating for mandatory warnings on labels to prevent future incidents. The coroner overseeing the case also supports this recommendation and plans to contact regulatory authorities to address the issue. The Food Standards Authority has received the Coroner’s Report and will carefully consider its findings. Rohan’s family is also calling for increased awareness and screening of undiagnosed metabolic conditions like OTC. Metabolic Support UK is supporting these efforts and is urging for product labelling and ammonia testing to become standard practices. They believe these measures could save lives by preventing dangerous protein spikes and catching metabolic conditions early. However, some experts express concerns about the practicality and effectiveness of adding warnings for every rare condition on food labels. They suggest alternative solutions, such as QR codes on packaging that can link consumers to government websites listing relevant product categories and associated warnings. The discussion around these issues requires careful consideration of practicality, information overload, and potential strain on healthcare systems. USN, the company associated with the protein powder, has not yet responded to inquiries about the incident.
