Syntegon has reached an important milestone in its sustainability strategy. The Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) has validated the company’s climate targets, affirming their alignment with the global goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C. Sustainable solutions form a foundational aspect of Syntegon’s corporate and growth strategy. By 2030, the processing and packaging expert aims to decrease its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 48.3 percent compared to 2019 levels. These emissions stem from direct sources, such as heating fuel, and indirect sources, including purchased electricity.
Furthermore, Syntegon intends to reduce its Scope 3 CO2 emissions—encompassing emissions from purchased goods and the use of sold equipment—by 25 percent compared to 2022. “This is an ambitious goal, as our machines are designed for a long lifespan and we need to plan well into the future,” states Steffen Carbon, coordinator for development methods at Syntegon. “By forming long-term partnerships with our customers, we support them on their path toward greater sustainability through resource-efficient technologies and lifecycle services.”
Ambitious Targets with Tangible Reductions
The SBTi establishes the standards, tools, and guidelines necessary for companies to set greenhouse gas reduction targets, with the aim of limiting global warming to 1.5°C and reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. The validation signifies that Syntegon’s sustainability targets align with the 1.5°C objective. Although this goal is ambitious, it correctly identifies crucial levers for change, as Scope 3 emissions represent 95 percent of the company’s total CO2 emissions—primarily resulting from machine operations at customer sites. Syntegon is committed to achieving genuine reductions rather than relying on CO2 compensations,” Carbon emphasizes.
Sustainable Supply Chain with Reduced Energy Use and Lower Emissions
Focusing on energy efficiency, Syntegon aims to minimize the energy consumption of its machines. This not only leads to substantial reductions in emissions but also decreases operational costs. Ensuring sustainability throughout the entire supply chain remains a high priority for Syntegon. The company is adopting measures to cut emissions through the use of sustainable alternatives like green steel and renewable energy in its production processes. “Through our comprehensive goals, we are a trusted partner for customers who also prioritize sustainability and expect the same commitment from their suppliers. We share their values and actively assist them in implementing a sustainable strategy for the future,” asserts Torsten Türling, CEO of the Syntegon Group.
