The Cold Chain Federation (CCF) and the British Frozen Food Federation (BFFF) have united to support The Move to -15°C, a global coalition advocating for an increase in the temperature at which frozen food is stored and transported from -18 to -15 degrees Celsius.

Recent studies indicate that raising the storage temperature does not compromise food safety or quality. Importantly, this adjustment could lead to significant reductions in carbon emissions.

Both federations have a history of engaging in research aimed at revising a temperature standard that has remained unchanged for nearly a century. By joining this coalition, they commit to representing the perspectives of hundreds of frozen food and logistics businesses throughout the UK in this important campaign.

Phil Pluck, CEO of the Cold Chain Federation, stated: “The -18°C standard has not been reviewed in almost a century. Meanwhile, the technology, equipment, and processes used to manage temperature-controlled logistics have advanced beyond recognition.”

He added, “The result is that we’re now able to make this tremendously positive change without compromising the substantial benefits frozen food delivers to consumers and businesses.”

Furthermore, he noted, “The CCF and its members are a driving force behind the creation of environmentally sustainable solutions for delivering safe food to UK consumers. This initiative has the potential to achieve notable carbon savings both in the UK and globally, which is why we fully endorse the ambitions of this coalition.”

Rupert Ashby, CEO of the British Frozen Food Federation</a>, remarked: “For a century, frozen food has provided numerous advantages to consumers and companies, preserving nutritional value while offering quality products at more affordable prices. It also plays a crucial role in minimizing food waste, addressing a significant environmental challenge.”

He continued, “If science and evidence support an increase in temperature, our industry can sustain these benefits while achieving further reductions in carbon emissions. That’s why we’re joining the Move to -15°C coalition on behalf of our members.”

Thomas Eskesen, chairman of the Move to -15°C, expressed, “We are excited to receive backing from the BFFF and CCF. As key representatives of the UK’s frozen food industry, their support signifies a major milestone in our mission.”

He added, “By collaborating, we can positively impact the environment. Redefining frozen food temperature standards could save 17.7 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to removing 3.8 million cars from the road each year.”

“Collaboration is central to our goals, and we are pleased to see ongoing support for our coalition. We encourage anyone interested in learning more about our initiatives to reach out and consider joining us.”
