Graphic Packaging International, a global leader in food and drink sustainable packaging, has partnered with Moy Park, a prominent food company, to introduce a groundbreaking cartonboard packaging solution for retailer Sainsbury’s. This innovative solution, known as PaperSeal® Shape cartonboard tray, is now available on-shelf for Sainsbury’s private-label breaded chicken products. By using 72 to 82 percent less plastic per tray (depending on pack size), this new packaging removes approximately 300 tonnes of plastic from the supply chain annually, aligning with Sainsbury’s commitment to its ‘Plan for Better’.
Developed in collaboration with G. Mondini, a leading tray sealing technology company, PaperSeal Shape features a patented double sealing flange and rigid construction that ensures a hermetic seal for the modified atmosphere trays. This seal provides an equivalent shelf life to the plastic trays it replaces. Moreover, the tray is easily recyclable by consumers, containing less than 10 percent plastic by total pack weight and meeting On-Pack Recycling Label (OPRL) scheme guidelines in the UK.
Paul Tye, new business development director at Graphic Packaging, emphasizes the game-changing nature of PaperSeal for retailers seeking to reduce plastic usage while maintaining packaging performance. Working closely with Moy Park, operational and supply chain efficiency was optimized, with trays being supplied from Graphic Packaging’s UK facility to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with packaging transport.
Matt Harris, head of packaging at Moy Park, highlights the collaborative effort involved in developing this sustainable solution. By pooling expertise from various parts of the value chain, an innovative, recyclable cartonboard tray was created, significantly reducing plastic usage in the supply chain.
