Puratos UK is implementing an expansion plan to relocate its production of fillings and sourdough from the Simonswood site to a consolidated facility. This new site has been dedicated to producing patisserie, bakery mixes, and improvers for over 30 years, enhancing the company’s operational efficiency.
This significant investment aligns with the surge in UK demand for bakery products, prompting Puratos UK to increase its production capacity for fillings and incorporate the capability to create patisserie glazes.
Moreover, the expansion will generate 37 new job opportunities within the community, spanning roles in production, warehousing, research and development, quality control, and engineering. It will also solidify Buckingham’s position as the center of technical excellence for the company.
In addition to catering to the rising demand in the UK market, this move furthers Puratos’s sustainability strategy in Britain. The company has outlined plans to significantly decrease plastic packaging used for its fillings.
In line with its commitment to reducing single-use plastics, Puratos UK is transitioning from ‘bag-in-bucket’ packaging to more sustainable options, such as heat-sealed buckets and pouches for its chocolate, cream, caramel, and fruit fillings.
Furthermore, the facilities have achieved BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) certification. This accomplishment supports its ambitious goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030, focusing on reducing carbon emissions while enhancing energy efficiency—approximately 50% of its credits are dedicated to these objectives.
“The UK is a large and growing market for sweet baked goods, driven by consumer desire for affordable treats and healthier indulgence. Alongside rising demand for fewer food miles and increased supply chain transparency, the Buckingham expansion is an important step in meeting the needs of our customers and British consumers,” commented Julia Darvill, managing director at Puratos UK & Ireland.
She continued: “With all our technical specialists in one location, we will be better placed to address our customers’ challenges, bring bakery creativity to life, and help them succeed in today’s exciting but challenging market.”
“The expansion is also an opportunity for us to continue our commitment to sustainability by making all-important changes to packaging – aligning with both our own and our customers’ goals.”
The new production lines at the Buckingham facility are set to launch in November 2025, ensuring that the supply of all Puratos UK ingredients remains uninterrupted throughout this period.
