Meatable, a Dutch food tech company, has achieved a significant milestone in its mission to provide cultivated meat at scale. The company’s technology can now create cultivated pork products within just eight days, thanks to its unique differentiation process. This improvement in efficiency has allowed Meatable to increase the amount and quality of fat and muscle tissue, resulting in products that are indistinguishable from traditional meat.

Meatable isolates a single animal cell and replicates its natural growth process using opti-ox technology and pluripotent stem cells (PSCs). The use of PSCs is a significant advantage over immortalised cell lines used elsewhere in the cultivated meat industry. However, changing stem cells into more specialised cells, such as muscle cells, can be challenging. Opti-ox technology overcomes this challenge by producing fully differentiated real muscle and fat cells in just a few days.

This landmark achievement brings Meatable closer to realising their vision of providing harm-free meat for mass consumption. Krijn de Nood, the co-founder and CEO of Meatable, says, “This marks a very important milestone for Meatable. We’ve now demonstrated that we have the world’s most efficient process, required to create products that are price competitive with conventional meat. Achieving our vision necessitates affordability, such that cultivated meat becomes accessible to the masses.”

The breakthrough is a significant boost for the meat industry, which is set to grow from 350 billion kg annually to between 460 to 570 billion kg by 2050. By producing meat without harming people, animals, or the planet, Meatable could have a major impact by becoming a staple in diets around the world. The company hopes that by 2035, it will have saved an estimated 27 million animal lives cumulatively through its revolutionary process.

Daan Luining, the co-founder, and CTO of Meatable highlights the team’s unwavering commitment to creating only the best possible products for maximum efficiency, quality, and competitiveness. Meatable is now ready to scale up production of its products at a cost-competitive price point to meet mass market demand, enabling widespread accessibility.
