Nepal has recently taken a significant step by banning spices from the popular MDH and Everest brands due to concerns over ethylene oxide, a harmful chemical. This decision aligns with similar actions taken by Hong Kong and Singapore, further highlighting the global importance of food safety standards.
According to news agency ANI, Nepal’s Department of Food Technology and Quality Control has initiated testing on the two Indian spice brands and has prohibited their import, consumption, and sale. This move comes after traces of harmful chemicals were reported in the spices, prompting a swift response from Nepali authorities.
The government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s Centre for Food Safety also discovered the presence of pesticide in samples of MDH and Everest spice products, leading to a ban on the sale of these goods. In Singapore, regulators found carcinogenic chemicals in products from both companies, triggering a product recall to prevent potential health risks associated with ethylene oxide exposure.
In Australia, Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is currently investigating contamination claims regarding spice mixes from MDH and Everest. This investigation may lead to a recall of these products in Australia, similar to actions taken in Hong Kong and Singapore.
As the scrutiny on these spice brands intensifies, consumers worldwide are urged to stay informed about potential recalls and ensure the safety of their food purchases. The Spices Board of India is actively collaborating with international authorities to investigate the issue, underscoring the importance of adhering to regulatory standards in the food industry.
In response to allegations of pesticide presence in their products, MDH has denied the claims and reassured consumers of the safety of their products. The All India Consumer Products Distributors Federation has advised its members to follow FSSAI guidelines regarding the sale of MDH and Everest masale products, emphasizing that until official concerns or restrictions are raised, it is safe to continue selling these products.
The regulatory actions taken by Nepal, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Australia highlight the critical importance of maintaining food safety standards and responding swiftly to potential health risks. As investigations continue and regulatory bodies collaborate on addressing these issues, it is crucial for businesses and consumers alike to prioritize food safety and stay vigilant about product recalls and safety advisories.
