The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has made a significant announcement: British food producers are poised to capitalize on export opportunities totaling nearly £100 million. This promising development follows the diligent efforts of its agri-food attachés.

Since January, Defra reports that its 16 agri-food attachés have successfully unlocked these substantial export opportunities. They achieved this by effectively removing 41 trade barriers, which has paved the way for “new global markets” for British producers. Among the impressive accomplishments is the reopening of pork exports to China, valued at approximately £80 million. Additionally, access to Vietnam’s live seafood market, estimated at £4 million annually, has been secured. In the dairy sector, a remarkable £35 million in exports to Egypt has been unlocked, complemented by a new deal worth £3.8 million in annual pork exports to Mexico. These figures highlight the extensive market potential available to British food producers, as outlined by industry estimates.

The establishment of this scheme has significantly “extended the global reach” of the UK’s food and drink sector. Notably, one of the past triumphs for British farmers and producers occurred in September 2024, when access to the US market was granted to beetroot growers, marking a historic first.

Through the invaluable partnership between the agri-food attaché network and industry stakeholders, the government aims to “safeguard food security and create economic benefits for businesses and communities” throughout the UK. This initiative is part of its comprehensive Plan for Change, focused on stimulating growth within the agricultural sector.

Dame Angela Eagle, Minister for Food Security, remarked: “Every trade barrier we remove is another door opened for British farmers and food producers to sell their world-leading products.” She emphasized the global demand for British food and drink, stating, “From our beef to our baked goods, British food and drink is highly sought after in markets worldwide. Thanks to the dedicated work of our trade attachés, we’re helping our producers grow their businesses and the economy.”

Eagle concluded by highlighting the collaborative efforts undertaken by the government in support of the food and farming sectors, stating, “This boost to export opportunities shows what can be achieved when Government works hand-in-hand with our food and farming sectors to champion British products across the globe.”

“International trade plays a major role in supporting our levy payers and the collaborative approach between AHDB, industry, and Government in securing market access.”

Looking ahead, the agri-food attachés, stationed in key international markets, will return from their overseas posts between November 3rd and 7th. During this time, they will engage with the producers whose interests they represent, fostering communication and collaboration.

Jonathan Eckley, International Trade Development Director at the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), stated, “Ensuring we have a broad portfolio of markets for our world-class red meat and dairy produce is essential to maximize opportunities around the world. We will continue to work with the agri-attachés, wider Government, and industry to help ensure those products thrive in the global market.” In doing so, Eckley emphasized the importance of international trade in supporting levy payers and underscored the tangible outcomes resulting from the collaborative efforts between AHDB, industry, and Government.

In the past year, the UK has seen notable success in its agri-food exports, with top items including luxurious offerings such as chocolate and salmon, alongside essential goods like animal feed and cereals, as highlighted by Defra. This trend showcases the diverse portfolio of British exports and reinforces the importance of continuing to build strong international trade relationships.
