In the food and beverage industry, cell culture media is a vital component for cultivating meat. It provides the necessary nutrients for cell proliferation in vitro. However, this media is often cost-prohibitive and generates significant waste.

To address these challenges, CellRev, a UK-based bioprocessing company, has partnered with Saint-Gobain Life Sciences, a US-headquartered company, to develop an innovative process for media rejuvenation. Currently, media cannot be easily reused due to the toxins secreted by cells. By combining CellRev’s bioprocessing expertise with Saint-Gobain Life Sciences’ filtration capabilities, the partners aim to remove toxins and replenish spent media, allowing its recirculation in the process.

Together, they will collaborate on scoping, designing, and testing a media rejuvenation solution that can reduce waste in the cell cultivation process. The goal is to maximize the recirculation of media and achieve significant cost savings. This technology is intended to be easily integrated into any manufacturing line.

Cultivated meat production costs are expected to decrease, benefiting both the industry and consumers. Chris Green, the CEO of CellRev, emphasized the importance of cell culture in addressing human and planetary health challenges. He envisions a more sustainable process that is capable of meeting the growing demand for cell cultivation.

Saint-Gobain Life Sciences sees this partnership as an opportunity to support sustainability in bioprocessing. By leveraging their material expertise and specially engineered filtration solutions, coupled with CellRev’s continuous cell processing platform, they aim to develop cost-saving solutions that reduce the high-cost media use.

The development project is planned to conclude in 2024, following multiple phases of development. The partners are confident that the collaboration will deliver a sustainable solution with a significant impact on multiple markets.
