Yoplait is taking legal action against Danone, alleging that the company has replicated its popular Skyr yoghurt range. This product originates from Iceland and is known for being crafted from skimmed milk and specific bacterial cultures.
“We can confirm that Yoplait Ireland has issued proceedings in the High Court against Nutricia Ireland (Danone) regarding the passing off of its Yoplait Skyr yoghurt range,” stated Andrew Burke, general manager for Yoplait Ireland. “We will leave it to the courts to resolve this matter.”
In response, a spokesperson for Danone commented: “Danone notes the legal proceedings initiated by Yoplait in Ireland – as a matter of course, we do not comment on such ongoing proceedings.”
According to the Irish Independent, Yoplait filed the case earlier this month, with a mention scheduled in the Commercial Court on 29 April.
Food Manufacture has contacted the Commercial Court in Ireland for further comment on this legal conflict.
Launched in Ireland in September 2022, the Yoplait Skyr range is now available at most major retailers. Additionally, the product is currently being introduced in the UK under the name Skyr Natural.
Yoplait primarily focuses on children’s yoghurt. Its portfolio includes well-known products like Petits Filous and Frubes. The company is owned by French dairy cooperative Sodiaal, which acquired it from General Mills in 2021.
Danone, a global leader in food and beverage, is headquartered in France and specializes in dairy, water, and specialized nutrition products. Its brand portfolio includes renowned names such as Alpro, Activia, and Evian.
