UK FSA introduces additional control measures for imported spices from India Food standards agency Food and Beverage Business

The UK’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) has implemented “extra control measures” on Indian spice imports to address a recent contamination scare in the food and beverage industry. Natasha Smith, deputy director of food policy at the FSA, confirmed the agency’s actions, stating that the measures target pesticide residues in spices from India, specifically ethylene oxide. The use of ethylene oxide is prohibited in the UK, and maximum residue levels are in place for herbs and spices. Smith emphasized that consumer protection is a top priority for the FSA, and swift action will be taken to address any unsafe food or products in the market.

Ethylene oxide, commonly used overseas to control pathogens like salmonella, has raised concerns in Australia as well. Australian food standards agency is investigating potential contamination in spices manufactured by Indian brands Everest and MDH. In response to the situation, Singapore and Hong Kong have already halted the sale of certain spice blends, including an Everest fish curry mix and three MDH spice blends.

While the FSA did not disclose specific details about their next steps, they introduced these control measures in March to ensure food safety. Everest, based in Mumbai, and MDH, headquartered in Delhi, produce a variety of spices and food products distributed globally. MDH issued a statement refuting the contamination claims, emphasizing that they do not use Ethylene Oxide in any stage of their spice production process.

As the investigation continues, Everest is yet to comment on the issue.
