New Nestlé Factory in Ukraine to Begin Production by Year-End

New Nestlé Factory in Ukraine to Begin Production by Year-End Nestlé Food and Beverage Business

Nestlé has announced plans to commence production at a new factory in Ukraine by the fourth quarter of this year. This facility, located in the Volyn oblast of north-west Ukraine, was initially expected to become operational earlier this year.

Situated in Smolyhiv, approximately 40 miles from the Polish border, the factory will focus on manufacturing noodle products. Nestlé already operates another facility just four miles away in Torchyn, which specializes in sauces. The company, which currently employs around 5,500 individuals in Ukraine, also has two additional production sites in the country: a coffee and confectionery plant in Lviv and another noodle factory in Kharkiv.

While a spokesperson for Nestlé refrained from providing specifics regarding the reasons behind the delay, the company has emphasized that the factories in Smolyhiv and Torchyn will serve as “the European regional hub” for its culinary product category. These sites are expected to supply both domestic and several undisclosed markets across Europe.

The establishment of the new production facility is projected to generate 300 to 400 new jobs in the manufacturing sector. As part of broader discussions surrounding corporate responsibility, Nestlé has appeared on Ukraine’s ‘international sponsors of war’ list, a document aimed at highlighting large companies still operating in Russia after the invasion. Notable names such as Unilever, Mars, Bonduelle, and PepsiCo are also on this list, underlining a growing concern about businesses that continue to engage with the Russian market amidst geopolitical turmoil.

Recently, this list was moved out of the public eye following pressure from various countries, citing issues related to regulatory frameworks and the negative implications on bureaucratic processes aimed at countering Russian aggression. Nestlé’s 2023 annual report revealed that the company maintains operations at six factories in Russia, which produce a range of products including beverages, dairy, nutrition and health products, prepared dishes, confectionery, and pet food.

Despite ongoing operations, the KitKat maker has stated on its website that it has ceased advertising in Russia and has “suspended further capital investment,” while ensuring it meets its obligations to employees. The company asserts, “For the foreseeable future, these measures will apply as our operations in Russia remain focused on providing essential and basic foods to the local people.”

As trends continue to evolve within the food and beverage industry, the commitment to responsible corporate practices and the adaptation of business strategies remain crucial for navigating the complexities of the current landscape. By staying attuned to shifts in consumer behavior and maintaining a focus on sustainability, Nestlé and other key players within the food and drink business can work to align their objectives with industry expectations while promoting growth through thoughtful engagement in consumer trends.
