The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) recently announced the resignation of CEO Luiz Amaral for personal reasons. Susan Jenny Ehr, the Chief Legal Officer, will serve as the interim CEO until a permanent replacement is found. Amaral stated, “These issues require my full attention at this time, prompting my decision to step down.”
Earlier this year, Amaral faced criticism for a controversial statement regarding the organization’s policy on carbon offsets. Despite the backlash, he expressed his regret for causing concern and distress. He emphasized his belief in the importance and impact of SBTi but acknowledged the need for new leadership.
Francesco Starace, the chair of SBTi, emphasized the organization’s commitment to helping companies worldwide meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. The SBTi will soon release a discussion paper with draft proposals for potential changes to the Scope 3 standards.
The resignation of Luiz Amaral has led to calls for new leadership to guide SBTi into a promising new phase. The focus remains on delivering impactful solutions to combat climate change and support global sustainability initiatives in the food and beverage industry.
