First Milk, a UK milk and cheese co-op, completes acquisition of BV Dairy "First Milk, Nestlé, Tesco Food and Beverage Business

Scottish dairy co-operative First Milk has acquired English peer BV Dairy. The acquisition was completed for an undisclosed sum. First Milk CEO Shelagh Hancock believes BV Dairy, known for its strong customer relationships and quality reputation across food manufacture and service, will be a valuable addition to their business. The purchase is expected to expand First Milk’s manufacturing and market reach, offering a platform for further growth and development. The move will also bring wider benefits, adding value for members and creating opportunities for colleagues.

BV Dairy, established in 1958 and based in Dorset, England, specializes in chilled dairy products, serving food manufacturers, hospitality, and foodservice providers across England, Scotland, and Wales. Following the acquisition, the company will continue its operations as a business unit of First Milk, ensuring its high-quality products and services remain unchanged.

The decision to sell BV Dairy was made to secure a future for customers, colleagues, farmers, and suppliers. BV Dairy Managing Director Jim Highnam expressed his confidence in the transaction, signaling a shared pragmatic approach between the two businesses. Both companies are looking forward to working together to continue growing and developing BV Dairy.

The transition was prompted by BV Dairy’s ownership status, with no family members from the next generation likely to take over the business. The shareholders and directors concluded that new ownership could unlock the next phase of BV Dairy’s growth.

First Milk, established in 2002, is owned by approximately 700 British farmers. The co-operative’s product range includes dairy goods such as Red Leicester, Cheddar, and Double Gloucester cheeses, bulk cream, whey protein, and fresh milk. In addition to its acquisition of BV Dairy, First Milk operates two other British cheese creameries in England and Wales. It also has partnerships with prominent national retailers and maintains a significant international presence, exporting to 26 countries.

Furthermore, First Milk is looking to expand its reach and product portfolio by bringing BV Dairy into its operations. This strategic acquisition marks an important milestone in First Milk’s growth and development within the food and beverage industry. The addition of BV Dairy enhances its position as a leading player in the food and drink market, aligning with current consumer trends and industry demands.
