Iceland, a leading supermarket chain, has announced its decision to close down four out of its five Swift stores permanently. The remaining store will undergo a conversion to a standard Iceland format. However, all the staff members are expected to be offered positions in other Iceland stores, ensuring their job security.
In a statement, Iceland emphasized its commitment to reviewing and enhancing its retail portfolio in order to deliver value and convenience to the communities it serves. While the Swift fascia will not be further pursued, Iceland is proud to see its Iceland, Food Warehouse, and Iceland Local brands flourishing with new store openings across the United Kingdom.
Notably, the company has experienced significant growth in London, where the Swift format was initially introduced. As a result, Iceland is investing £3m over the next 12 months to modernize its existing estate and open new stores in the capital city.
Iceland introduced its first Swift store in 2021, transforming an outlet in Newcastle. Currently, the other Swift stores are all based in London. This convenience format was designed to encompass grocery, frozen food, fresh produce, and food-to-go, catering to the immediate needs of customers.
