ALPLA has made a strong commitment to plastics recycling for years, and this commitment is now consolidated under the new ALPLArecycling brand.
Alpla, a globally active plastic packaging company, is taking a major step forward by consolidating all its activities under a new brand, Alplarecycling. This move comes after the company’s significant investments in new sites in South Africa, Romania, Thailand, and a site expansion in Poland.
Since 2005, Alpla Group has been investing in the development of its own recycling capacities, striving to process at least 25 percent post-consumer material (PCR) by 2025. With a focus on mechanical recycling, Alpla has invested over €50 million annually in expanding its activities worldwide since 2021.
Through the establishment of new plants, expansion of existing facilities, joint ventures, and strategic acquisitions, Alpla has successfully doubled its annual installed and projected output capacity to accommodate 350,000 tonnes of PCR material. Moreover, the company’s new facility in South Africa and the site expansion in Poland contribute to an annual capacity of 266,000 tonnes of rPET (recycled PET) and 84,000 tonnes of rHDPE (recycled HDPE), thus meeting the growing demand.
With a team of about 1,100 employees dedicated to recycling, Alpla not only focuses on the production of high-quality rPET and rHDPE at its 13 plants, including joint ventures, but also on the development of sustainable packaging solutions. These solutions prioritize a high proportion of recycled materials, optimal recyclability, and reduced weight. The establishment of the Alplarecycling brand, along with its dedicated website, reflects the company’s commitment to the recycling sector’s expansion and emerging markets.
“Recycling plastics reduces carbon consumption by up to 90 percent, minimizes waste, and generates value and employment opportunities,” emphasized Alpla CEO Philipp Lehner. Furthermore, Dietmar Marin, managing director of the Recycling division at Alpla, highlighted the competitive advantage their expertise and access to materials provide to customers. The company plans to intensify its activities in growth markets such as southern Africa, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region in the coming years.
Currently processing 20 percent PCR material, Alpla aims to increase this to at least 25 percent by 2025. Additionally, the company is committed to ensuring that all its packaging solutions are fully recyclable by this target date. Alpla has been an active participant in the New Plastics Economy, an initiative led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, since 2018.
