Nestlé Cereal Partners UK (CPUK), the manufacturer of Nestlé Cereals, has taken a significant step towards its goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050 with the purchase of its first eHGV. The battery electric vehicle, manufactured by Volvo, will be stationed at CPUK’s Wiltshire factory in Staverton. The company plans to use the eHGV for stock delivery from its distribution center in Melksham to customers in the surrounding area, as well as for internal pallet movement within the Staverton site.

To support the deployment of the new electric vehicle, CPUK has installed a 160kW DC EV charger at the distribution center, capable of charging the Volvo eHGV in just two hours.

Nestlé UK and Ireland has committed to reducing its emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Additionally, CPUK has pledged to reduce its emissions by 20% by 2025, a target it is on track to achieve ahead of schedule this year.

Patryk Zmaczyński, head of supply chain & procurement at CPUK, stated, “As we continue to evolve our operations to be more sustainable, the purchase of our first electric truck marks a notable landmark in our commitment to being net zero by 2050. We have been early adopters of electric vehicles and continue to invest significantly in the technology. The investment in the vehicle and charging point will enable us to start to deliver our much-loved brands to our customers in a way that has a reduced impact on the environment.”

In addition to electric vehicles, Nestlé UK and Ireland is exploring other avenues to decarbonize its transport operations. The company has deployed trucks running on liquefied natural gas (bio-LNG) and launched a double-stacked rail freight trial for deliveries to Tesco in August 2023, aiming to reduce emissions by transporting more goods in fewer rail journeys.

To further enhance sustainability within its wider supply chain, CPUK introduced the Nestlé Wheat Plan in 2022. This initiative partners with British wheat farmers to promote the adoption of regenerative agriculture practices, reinforcing CPUK’s commitment to sustainable farming.
