2 Sisters has recently introduced a new concept called ‘Space to Thrive’ in collaboration with Co-op, which focuses on improving the welfare of chickens by implementing a stocking density measure. Under this initiative, all birds in the range will have a maximum stocking density of 30kg of chicken per square meter. This allows the birds to have 30% more space than standard ranges, enabling them to move around freely and exhibit natural behaviors.

Starting from today, all of the Co-op’s fresh whole chicken products will adhere to the 30kg stocking density requirement, marking a significant welfare milestone in the poultry industry. Ranjit Singh, owner & President of 2 Sister’s parent company Boparan Holdings, expressed his enthusiasm about this partnership with Co-op, emphasizing the company’s commitment to producing happier and healthier birds.

“We’ve listened very closely to our customers – and also consumers – who tell us they want more options when it comes to higher welfare chicken as well,” he stated. “We’ll always produce the full range of products, ranging from organic, free-range to standard birds, but as the years go by, more and more people are asking for higher welfare birds that are still competitively priced, and that’s what we’re proud to deliver.”

Furthermore, 2 Sisters initiated its transition towards higher welfare birds in 2020 across an estate encompassing 60 farms in the UK. By October 2022, more than 2 million birds processed each week met the higher welfare standards set by the company. Agricultural Director Nick Davies highlighted the collaboration and effort from various teams within the organization to ensure the successful implementation of this transition.

“Our customers have supported us through this journey and are now delivering ranges to their consumers that they’re asking for,” Davies added.
