Walkers, owned by PepsiCo UK & Ireland, has announced that its Snack A Jacks brand will be available in a new “bagless” multipack design. The design comprises a tape-like strip that holds together five individual packets of Snack A Jacks. The format is set to hit Tesco stores across the UK in three flavours: Salt & Vinegar, Sour Cream & Chive, and BBQ.
The innovative new design has been made possible thanks to a £2m investment in new equipment at Walkers’ manufacturing site in Skelmersdale, Lancashire. Both the outer tape and individual packs are recyclable in flexible packaging points in supermarkets across the UK under the OPRL scheme.
The brand’s owner, PepsiCo UK & Ireland, has committed to eliminating virgin fossil-based plastic in crisp and snack bags by 2030. This ambitious target will apply to a range of UK brands, including Snack A Jacks, Walkers, Doritos, Quavers, Wotsits, and Pipers, and will be achieved through the use of 100% recycled or renewable content.
According to Gareth Callan, packaging sustainability lead at PepsiCo UK & Ireland, the “new bagless multipack design is an innovative example of the solutions we’re exploring to reduce virgin fossil plastic use across our portfolio”. He added that the company is looking forward to assessing this new format as part of its commitment to creating a world where packaging never becomes waste.
In conclusion, this exciting development from Walkers is a clear demonstration of the company’s commitment to sustainable packaging. With the use of recycled or renewable materials set to become the norm for many brands, innovative designs like this bagless multipack offer a glimpse into the future of snack packaging.
