RDM Group Redefines PE-Coated Cartonboard with Multiboard® Barrier: The Eco-Friendly Alternative to All-Plastic Packaging

RDM Group Redefines PE-Coated Cartonboard with Multiboard® Barrier: The Eco-Friendly Alternative to All-Plastic Packaging Carton, food and drink packaging, food and drink sustainable packaging, Food packaging, Recyclability Food and Beverage Business

In an era of mounting pressure on brands to reduce plastic waste, RDM Group—a prominent producer of recycled cartonboard—is excited to unveil Multiboard® Barrier for the first time as an RDM product. This polyethylene (PE)-coated cartonboard is engineered to meet performance requirements while effectively tackling environmental challenges.

“At RDM Group, we believe that rethinking plastic for today’s world doesn’t mean eliminating it, but using it in a smarter more circular way,” said Krzysztof Krajewski, RDM Group’s chief innovation and sustainability officer. “Multiboard® Barrier is a solution that integrates minimal plastic use into a fibre-based board structure, optimising both functionality and recyclability.”

Engineered for Performance, Designed for Recycling

Multiboard® Barrier features a PE-coated cartonboard composition made entirely from 100% recycled fibres, crafted by RDM Group. It is tailored for high-performance applications where moisture and grease sensitivity render pure fibre packaging inadequate—ranging from frozen foods to household detergents and pet food.

Although derived from 100% recycled fibres, the plastic component constitutes only 3–5% of the total structure, depending on grammage. This minimal addition enhances essential functions such as Water Vapour Transmission Rate (WVTR) and Oil and Grease Resistance (OGR). Moreover, the PE layer acts as a heat-sealable adhesive, eliminating the need for complex laminates or additional adhesives that compromise recyclability. Significantly, Multiboard® Barrier aligns with the latest recycling industry standards.

PPWR-Ready and Future-Proof

As regulatory measures tighten across Europe and beyond, Multiboard® Barrier aligns with the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Its reduced plastic content, low carbon footprint, and certified recyclability establish it as an attractive option for brands aiming to future-proof their food and drink packaging.

Closing the Loop

RDM Group stands out with its closed-loop approach. As both a producer and recycler of in-house PE-coated cartonboard, the company oversees the product’s complete lifecycle. This integrated method enhances efficiency while bolstering sustainability outcomes. In 2024, the company reported a remarkable recovery of nearly 90% of pulper rejects, where plastic is a dominant component—signifying major strides towards long-term sustainability goals.

“We’re proving that even plastic-coated packaging can have a circular future,” added Krajewski. “Multiboard® Barrier goes beyond ticking regulatory boxes. It’s pushing the boundaries of what’s possible now, while we develop the next generation of sustainable materials.”

Available Now

Multiboard® Barrier is currently available in a diverse range of specifications, from 280 gsm to 500 gsm, offered in both reels and sheets, with optional finishes, colours, and surface treatments. This versatility enables converters and brands to customize food and drink sustainable packaging solutions that do not compromise on quality, performance, or environmental responsibility.
