Xampla, a pioneering materials technology company, has announced that its groundbreaking plastic-free Morro™ Coating has achieved an impressive recyclability score of 87 out of 100. This rating follows comprehensive testing carried out by DS Smith in collaboration with 4evergreen (4EG).

DS Smith stands out as a leading provider of sustainable packaging solutions, dedicated to supporting businesses in minimizing waste and enhancing recycling processes.

The assessment adhered to the 4EG Recyclability Evaluation Protocol, providing an expert analysis of material performance within typical recycling systems.

Results demonstrated that a 275 gsm kraft board coated with 6 gsm of Morro™ Coating is recyclable at standard mills in the UK, exhibiting excellent performance without any repulpability issues.

The Morro™ Coating’s overall recyclability score of 87/100 underscores its strong performance across several critical evaluation categories:

  • Yield Evaluation: Best in Class – Morro™ Coating earned a yield score of 92/100, placing it in the top tier for recoverable fibrous material. This score confirms that Morro™ Coating presents no repulpability challenges for recycling facilities.
  • Sheet Adhesion: Level 1 – The material received the highest adhesion rating, demonstrating no indications of tacky impurities, a common issue faced during paper production.
  • Visual Impurities: Level 2 – Morro™ Coating maintains the optical quality of recycled pulp in standard mills, showing only minor visual impurities that are considered acceptable.

Xampla’s Morro™ Coating represents a world-first plastic-free option derived from plant protein, offering a biodegradable and recyclable solution. Unlike traditional plastic or PFAS coatings, Morro™ Coating is entirely plant-based, free from harmful chemicals, and serves as a natural polymer alternative that complies with the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD).

The recyclability evaluation protocol developed by 4evergreen is vital for understanding the behavior of fibre-based packaging within recycling environments, further illustrating the potential of Morro™ in food and drink sustainable packaging.

Morro™ Coating serves as an effective drop-in replacement for conventional plastic and PFAS barrier coatings, enabling packaging manufacturers to boost recyclability credentials and enhance waste management strategies without sacrificing performance.

Marc Rodriguez-Garcia, Chief Technology Officer at Xampla, said:

“Achieving such a high recyclability score confirms the value that Morro™ Coating brings to the industry and to the environment.

“As brands look to future-proof their products and meet sustainability goals, our coating provides a viable alternative to plastic. Our partners benefit from the grease, water, and oxygen barrier performance, along with the heat-sealability properties that consumers require, all while ensuring the end product can be recycled within existing systems.”

Xampla’s Morro™ materials aim to empower everyone to Choose the Planet. The Morro Coating is fully compatible with current industrial-scale coating methods, serving as a drop-in solution for manufacturers. The Morro™ marque symbolizes that these materials are plastic-free, derived from plants, exhibit superior biodegradability, are compostable, and do not disrupt standard recycling processes.
