Evertis Ibérica Achieves RETRAY Certification for PET Thermoformed Trays in Commitment to Circular Economy

Evertis Ibérica Achieves RETRAY Certification for PET Thermoformed Trays in Commitment to Circular Economy food and drink packaging, food and drink sustainable packaging, Food packaging, plastic, Recyclability Food and Beverage Business

Evertis upholds its commitment to circularity by renewing its RETRAY certification, overseen by the Ecosense Foundation. This certification recognizes and promotes the work of companies that incorporate colorless transparent recycled PET, obtained from tray-to-tray recycling processes, into their film production processes for both monolayer and multilayer packaging, as well as recycled PET from other sources.

The RETRAY certification scheme plays a key role in establishing a circular economy model in the thermoformed PET packaging value chain by quantifying the recycled content from tray-to-tray circuits and other sources in accordance with the EN 15343 standard. It also verifies recyclability according to recycling guidelines published by the foundation.

Upon auditing Evertis Ibérica’s film manufacturing processes, compliance with the following RETRAY Procedure requirements was confirmed:

• Incorporation of recycled material traceability (upstream)

• Waste management traceability and limitation of non-recyclable materials (downstream)

• Adherence to UNE-EN 15343 requirements for calculating recycled content

• Transition from the former ECOSENSE certification

In 2019, Evertis Ibérica initially obtained the ECOSENSE certification, showing its commitment to the circular tray-to-tray model promoted by the foundation. Under the RETRAY scheme, the company certified a 26% incorporation of rPET in their production process in 2021 and has now increased to 33% in the most recent audit, surpassing the PPWD 2030 target of 30% recycled content by 2030.

The ultimate goal of RETRAY is to increase the volume of waste from the tray-to-tray loop that is recycled, bringing the PET thermoforming sector closer to meeting the ambitious targets set by the European Commission in the PPWR. Companies like Evertis are driving this progress through their commitment to circularity, aligning with the dedication of the Ecosense Foundation to advancing a true circular economy within the PET industry.
