“When we created the EnviroWare® brand over 17 years ago, our declared mission was to seek out more sustainable packaging solutions,” says Nick Burton, Managing Director of Celebration Packaging. “We have always believed that the provenance of raw materials is paramount when sourcing sustainable packaging; however, ensuring that it can be appropriately disposed of at its end-of-life is equally critical. Therefore, obtaining certification to prove that our products are 100% recyclable is crucial.”
Employing the recyclability assessment method EN13430, with testing grounded in the Confederation of European Paper Industries Recyclability Test Method Version 2 (2022), the company confirms that its cups are 100% recyclable in standard paper mills, eliminating the need for specialized facilities.
Celebration Packaging’s EnviroWare® bamboo fibre double-wall hot drink cups utilize Forest Stewardship Council® certified bamboo fibre, coupled with an aqueous-based lining. Meanwhile, the EnviroWare® Leaf 2 paper hot drink cups are crafted from FSC® certified material and feature a plant-based lining, representing a significant step in the evolution of food and drink sustainable packaging.
Both types of cups showcase the ‘Recycle’ logo and the Din Certco seedling logo, indicating their certification as commercially compostable (DIN EN 13432:2000-12). They carry clear messages: “Recycle with paper or compost commercially” and “Made from sustainable renewable resources.”
The Importance of Certification
“Earlier this year, we commissioned Sapio Research to conduct a survey examining consumer understanding of logos and terminology used in disposable foodservice packaging,” Nick Burton elaborates. “The survey revealed that 68% of consumers regard certification of food and drink packaging as very or extremely important. Furthermore, over three-fifths (61%) indicated that information on packaging is their primary source for understanding its correct disposal, reinforcing the necessity of proper certification.”
“Celebration Packaging has consistently invested in accreditations and certifications, which we take very seriously. This commitment enables us to substantiate our environmental and sustainability claims, distinguishing us from competitors and providing confidence to our customers as they navigate their sustainability journey.”
“If foodservice operators aim to enhance their sustainability credentials, they must collaborate with a consultative supplier. This partnership ensures they choose packaging that is functional, purpose-fit, appealing to consumers, and above all, sustainable,” concludes Nick Burton.
