Award-winning Devon snack maker, Burts Snacks, is set to launch its most environmentally friendly crisp packaging to date. Crafted from 55% recycled plastic, these innovative packs will debut across an array of popular flavors this summer.

The new packaging, utilizing post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic, will start appearing on store shelves throughout the South West and beyond in June 2025. Local favorites such as Devon Roast Beef, Mature Cheddar & Onion (featuring cheese from Quicke’s in Exeter), and Sea Salt & Malt Vinegar will be among the initial offerings sporting this eco-conscious design, available in both 40g and 150g sizes. A distinctive green flash on the packaging will help consumers easily identify this sustainability upgrade.

This initiative positions Burts at the forefront of sustainability, achieving the highest level of PCR plastic usage among hand-cooked crisp brands in the UK. The change is expected to save around 8,000 tonnes of virgin plastic, reinforcing the company’s broader commitment to minimizing environmental impact while supporting local suppliers.

Rikin Lakhani, Managing Director of Burts Snacks & Europe Snacks, commented on the new packaging: “Over the past few years, we’ve carefully considered the different ways we can move to a more environmentally friendly packaging while keeping the same high-quality hand-cooked chips our customers know and love. The new PCR packaging will take used materials and incorporate it into new plastic, helping to create a circular economy and a happier environment. We know we have a way to go in terms of sustainability, but we’ve made some real strides recently and are constantly looking at how we can do better.”

The shift to PCR packaging follows a series of sustainability enhancements that Burts has implemented in recent years. These improvements include reducing the thickness of plastic film, cutting cardboard usage by 10%, and collaborating with local South West suppliers such as South Devon Chilli Farm and Eversfield Organic to minimize food miles and support regional producers.

As consumer awareness of environmental impact continues to rise, Burts’ transitions reflect a growing demand for greener food and drink packaging options. This move underscores the brand’s dedication to its Devon heritage and commitment to the future of the planet.
