Year-on-year, aluminium packs collected through kerbside, bring, and on-the-go systems saw a significant 13% increase, totaling 115,382 compared to 102,195 in 2022. Additionally, the tonnage recovered from incinerator bottom ash (IBA) soared by 17% to 45,632, up from 38,982.
Alupro’s executive director, Tom Giddings, expressed his pleasure at announcing record-breaking recycling volumes for 2023. Despite more aluminium packaging entering the market this year, recycling rates have more than kept up with the increased demand. The industry’s long-term commitment to optimizing collection and recycling infrastructure over the past two decades is now paying off. Even in the face of delays and uncertainty surrounding national recycling legislation changes, the sector continues to surpass annual targets.
Every Can Counts program manager, Chris Latham-Warde, is hopeful that the impact of these initiatives will continue to promote best practice recycling behaviors and drive collection figures even higher as we move into 2024.
As we advance into the new year, we are optimistic about the positive effects of initiatives focused on food and drink sustainability, sustainable packaging, food and drink marketing, and food and drink consumer trends. These efforts aim to further improve recycling practices and increase collection rates within the industry.
