AkzoNobel Packaging Coatings convened prominent leaders from the metal packaging sector for an exclusive webinar aimed at exploring how brand owners, canmakers, and coatings suppliers are developing more compliant, resilient, and competitive supply chains amid Europe’s rapidly evolving regulatory environment.
Hosted by Tessa Slagter, Sustainable Innovation Manager at AkzoNobel Industrial Coatings, the session featured valuable insights from experts across public affairs, consumer brands, and packaging coatings.
Attendees gained a unique perspective from Hans van Bochove, Head of EU Affairs at The Heineken Company. He discussed how this leading beverage firm is preparing for forthcoming changes under the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and the implications for packaging strategies. Hans emphasized how The Heineken Company is meeting consumer demands for sustainability while also optimizing cost-efficiency and brand differentiation.
The webinar also included an in-depth briefing on upcoming European Union regulations by Diane Watson, Director at Rud Pedersen Public Affairs. Diane stressed the necessity of a proactive approach to navigate these changes, ensuring that product portfolios remain future-proof. She highlighted critical policy areas to monitor—including reforms to the EU’s chemical regulatory framework, the Circular Economy Act, and updates to food contact materials legislation.
Representing AkzoNobel, Chris Bradford, Market Director for Coil & Packaging Coatings, addressed the significant evolution of the regulatory landscape after a 50-year period of stability. Chris noted that the regulatory environment is now speeding towards a fragmented array of legislation due to the growing autonomy of various regulatory regions. He stressed that despite regional differences, there is a common global focus—particularly on bisphenols. Hence, manufacturers must invest in future-proof coatings innovations to proactively ensure compliance and mitigate risks and costs associated with frequent legislative changes. By staying ahead of regulations and adapting with robust technologies, companies can avoid regrettable substitutions and unpreparedness.
Chris Bradford stated: “The session underscored the need for closer collaboration between regulators, brand owners, manufacturers, and coatings suppliers. The complexity and speed of regulatory change mean that no part of the value chain can afford to work in isolation. Our goal with this webinar was to foster dialogue, share insight, and help prepare the industry for the future – Shaping Change Together.”
AkzoNobel’s webinar underscores its ongoing commitment to supporting packaging customers and brand owners through expertise, industry collaboration, and innovation in food and drink packaging and sustainable packaging solutions.
