In a significant advancement toward regional decarbonization, Türk Tuborg has formed a successful collaboration with GEA, a technology provider, to implement its inaugural industrial heat pump.
Located at the Tuborg brewery in İzmir, Türkiye, this newly installed system is already showcasing promising environmental and operational advantages in its initial phases of operation.
This initiative directly tackles the industry’s challenge of reducing its reliance on fossil fuels for heating by capturing and repurposing low-grade process heat that would typically be discarded.
Immediate gains in environmental performance and efficiency
The introduction of GEA’s industrial heat pump has brought about immediate improvements to the brewery’s energy dynamics:
- A 7.4 percent decrease in CO₂ emissions: During the early operation of the system, Türk Tuborg has managed to achieve a 7.4 percent reduction in carbon emissions.
- Enhanced energy efficiency: The overall energy performance of the facility has remained consistent during this transition phase.
- Decreased reliance on fossil fuels: By facilitating the internal recycling of thermal energy, this solution substantially diminishes the brewery’s reliance on traditional, non-renewable heating sources.
Seamless infrastructure integration
Without necessitating a complete facility overhaul, the efficient heat pump operates in full harmony with the brewery’s current cooling framework.
The system effectively harnesses low-grade waste heat from the cooling operations and upgrades it for use as process heat, which is then directed straight into the wort production line. This cohesive approach guarantees uninterrupted operations and optimized resource utilization. Additionally, the system is equipped with sophisticated control and monitoring features, enabling the engineering team to sustain a steady, reliable, and data-driven operation.
Contributing to national climate objectives
In addition to delivering immediate operational benefits, the implementation of this technology positions Türk Tuborg as an active contributor to regional climate initiatives.
The heat pump solution aligns with Türkiye’s ambitious goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2053. It also ensures that the brewery adheres to the new national climate regulations, which require detailed emissions reporting and reduction strategies for industrial players. By transforming waste heat from cooling processes into beneficial process energy, this partnership illustrates how industrial sustainability objectives can be effectively realized.
