Lidl has finally entered the caterpillar cake market, years after its competitors like Aldi with ‘Cuthbert’, Sainsbury’s ‘Wiggles’, and Tesco’s ‘Curly’ became beloved favorites. Acknowledging its previous gap in the cake selection, Lidl has introduced its own creation, ‘Cooper the Caterpillar,’ which will be available in stores across the country starting June 19 for £6.99.
In a lighthearted tone, the German grocery chain teasingly announces that the reasons for Cooper’s delayed launch will be unveiled in a whimsical book titled The Very Late Caterpillar.
Beginning June 19, 250 complimentary copies will be offered at www.lidlislatecaterpillar.co.uk, detailing Cooper’s recent adventures—featuring everything from strutting on the London Fashion Week cat(erpillar)walk to enjoying gnat summer and indulging in a series of Midgerton episodes in between.
Additionally, customers fortunate enough to receive one of these exclusive books will also find a Lidl Plus voucher code inside, redeemable for a free Colin the Caterpillar cake.
Reflecting on his experiences, Cooper remarked, “Time…flies… when you’re having fun. I know I’m a little late to the party but I can’t say I’ve met another grub that’s walked London Fashion Week or became the unlikely face of Gnat Summer.”
He continued, “To make up for keeping everyone waiting, I wanted to share my debut novel of how I wriggled my way to Lidl. You know what they say, it’s about the journey not the destination… and I’ve certainly taken the scenic route.”
In an interesting side note, Lidl’s discount rival Aldi previously introduced its own Cuthbert the Caterpillar and faced a trademark dispute with Marks & Spencer in court in 2022.
