Historic Italian liqueur brand Luxardo has unveiled an impressive overhaul of its packaging for its premium Limoncello. Launched just as the summer spritz season reaches its peak, the brand has replaced its classic frosted bottle with a sophisticated, vertically fluted glass design.

Though the all-natural liqueur within remains unchanged, this structural update marks a pivotal progression for Luxardo. The redesign harmoniously marries luxurious aesthetics with a commitment to modern environmental practices.

This packaging revamp arises from two key objectives: to enhance the brand’s visibility on shelves while significantly boosting the sustainability of its supply chain.

Luxardo aims to achieve three main goals in its manufacturing and marketing efforts:

  1. Phase out energy-intensive chemical frosting: The previous frosted glass required a chemical-laden and high-emission finishing process. By eliminating this step, glass production becomes more straightforward and the carbon footprint of the bottles is reduced.
  2. Enhance structural integrity of the glass: The new vertically fluted design not only adds strength but also optimizes weight, leading to reduced raw material consumption and greater durability during shipping.
  3. Improve production timelines: By eradicating finishing delays at the glass production facility, the redesign streamlines the manufacturing process, enhancing reliability in the supply chain and shortening delivery times for distributors worldwide.

To substantiate the redesign, Luxardo’s glass supplier undertook a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA). Findings indicated that the new bottle produces tangible reductions in various environmental impact areas, including reduced fossil fuel usage, lower carbon dioxide emissions, and decreased water consumption across all configurations.

In addition to its sustainability benefits, the textured surface of the bottle reflects light beautifully, enhancing its premium attractiveness for both professional bartenders and home mixology enthusiasts.

“The intention was to modernize the packaging while ensuring it remained instantly identifiable as Luxardo Limoncello,” states Nicolò Luxardo. “The shape and label layout are reminiscent of the previous design; however, we have removed the frosted finish and added vertical fluting to impart a more refined and textured appearance. An added advantage of this redesign is improved packaging efficiency.”

The refreshed Luxardo Limoncello bottles (27% ABV) are currently being distributed to major UK retailers, independent specialty stores, and select premium bars.
