In the world of food manufacturing, apprenticeships are a valuable tool for educating the next generation of skilled workers. In this month’s Food Manufacture Podcast, we had the chance to speak with two award-winning level 2 butchery apprentices from ABP Beef Guildford, Vincenza Cesano and Jessica Kellaway. They shared their experiences of being modern-day apprentices and their significant achievements.
Breaking Gender Barriers in Butchery
Kellaway, who decided to become a butcher despite it being a male-dominated industry, offered words of advice for anyone considering following in her footsteps: “go in head first.” Though initially intimidating, Kellaway has proven capable of doing the same work as her male peers, surprising her colleagues with her skills and abilities, and breaking down gender barriers in the profession.
“It’s quite male dominated and that can be quite off-putting to some women, quite intimidating when you first walk in,” said Kellaway. “When I applied for the butchery job, it was something completely different, and I was a bit apprehensive, but I thought, ‘you’ve got to give it your all’. If it’s not for you, it’s not for you – but if it is, you could have made the best decision of your life.”
Next-generation Apprentices
In addition to speaking with the butchery apprentices, we also talked to Dan Karlsson and Anthony Gaston at Plumpton College to learn more about the training the educator has to offer. They gave valuable insight into what manufacturers should expect from the next generation of food and drink apprentices and how to make the most of their potential.
The Importance of Gender Equity in the Workplace
Episode two of the new-look Food Manufacture Podcast focused on gender equity in the food and drink workplace. In it, industry leaders Ramona Hazan, Cheryl Allen and Eimear Robertson discussed the importance of creating a more gender-balanced work environment. It’s vital that everyone working in food manufacturing is given the same opportunities, regardless of gender, to drive innovation, productivity, and profitability for the industry.
