In a recent precautionary measure, the supermarket retailer has withdrawn and recalled specific houmous SKUs due to potential contamination with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC).
The affected products include the own-brand ‘Classic Houmous 315g’ (batch code: 8001352; use by date: 13 September 2025), and the own-brand ‘Lemon & Coriander Houmous 200g’ (batch code: 8062998; use by date: 14 September 2025).
Ingesting STEC can lead to symptoms such as diarrhoea, abdominal pain, bloody stools, and severe conditions like haemolytic uremic syndrome, which may result in kidney failure and can be fatal.
To inform consumers, Sainsbury’s has implemented point-of-sale notices in all stores where these products are sold, detailing the reasons for the recall.
Customers who bought either of the recalled products are advised not to consume them and to return the items to any Sainsbury’s store for a full refund.
“We would like to apologise for the inconvenience this may cause,” stated Sainsbury’s.
In a separate incident, Three Tuns Brewery is recalling various beers due to undeclared wheat and barley (gluten) not indicated on the labels.
This oversight poses a potential health risk to individuals with allergies or intolerances to barley, wheat, gluten, and those diagnosed with coeliac disease.
A total of five beer SKUs are under recall, including Three Tuns XXX (440 ml cans, 500 ml bottles), Three Tuns Cleric’s Cure (500 ml bottles), Three Tuns Stout (500 ml bottles), Three Tuns Best (500 ml bottles), and Three Tuns Solstice (500 ml bottles).
Three Tuns Brewery emphasizes that anyone with gluten, wheat, or barley allergies should avoid the aforementioned SKUs that have a best before date up to and including August 2026.
The brewery has proactively contacted relevant allergy support organizations to notify their members about the recall and has also issued point-of-sale notices to retailers.
