European frozen potato products producer Agristo is poised to expand its global footprint by establishing its first production facility in the United States, specifically in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

The Belgian company is also amplifying its production capacity in Europe as its core focus remains on “meeting increasing demand” in the region.

Currently, work is ongoing at its Wielsbeke site in Belgium. Additionally, preparatory efforts are underway for a new plant in Escaudoeuvres, France.

Agristo acquired the Escaudoeuvres site, which is expected to become operational in 2027, from sugar producer Tereos.

The company states: “These investments are designed to support growth and ensure we can meet future market needs efficiently.”

Previously, this French fries manufacturer ventured beyond Europe with an operation in India through the Agristo Masa joint venture.

Agristo’s decision to select Grand Forks was driven by the state’s “strong agricultural community” and “deep expertise” in potato farming.

North Dakota’s vast agricultural land and favorable growing conditions proved ideal during extensive tests of potato varieties. These trials demonstrated exceptional potential for optimal crop yield and quality, as the company highlighted.

Furthermore, Agristo anticipates that the region’s “expansive land and development-friendly policies” will create “ample room for future growth,” aligning perfectly with its objective to grow alongside increasing market demand.

Agristo has actively collaborated with American farmers to test various potato strains, ensuring they select the most viable options.

The initial investment for the Grand Forks site is projected at €437.3m ($450m) for the first phase, with groundbreaking scheduled for later this year.

The new U.S. facility is expected to create between 300 to 350 direct jobs while stimulating indirect investments in agriculture and supply chains.

Founded in 1986, Agristo serves over 540 customers across 130 countries worldwide.
