JBS, the majority shareholder of Biotech Foods, has embarked on constructing the world’s largest cultivated beef protein plant in San Sebastián, Spain. This move is expected to accelerate the development of the cultivated protein market on a global scale. The first commercial scale industrial plant of Biotech Foods is expected to be completed next year, with a production capacity of over 1,000 tonnes per year and a potential to increase to 4,000 tons annually over time. The $41mn investment will result in the creation of approximately 150 jobs, including qualified research and development professionals.

Built on a 20,000 square metre plot of land, the plant will be constructed with the view that facilities will expand in the future. The company plans to gradually increase its production capacity, targeting key markets like Australia, Brazil, the European Union, Japan, Singapore, and the United States, to meet the growing consumer demand.

In the words of Iñigo Charola, the co-founder and CEO of Biotech Foods, “Biotech Foods has the technology and capacity to produce protein on a large scale in a sustainable and innovative manner, addressing commercial needs around the world. Given the challenges imposed on global supply chains, cultivated protein has the potential to stabilize food security and global protein production.”

Moreover, JBS will establish a biotechnology and cultivated protein R&D centre in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil, with a $60mn investment. The JBS Biotech Innovation Center aims to develop 100% Brazilian technology to produce alternative proteins. This move follows the opening of JBS’s three new Green Offices in Brazil earlier this year.
