The initiative aims to reduce methane emissions as part of Mars’ net-zero emissions target by 2050, with a 50% reduction goal by 2030. This partnership also extends to collaboration with Germany’s DMK Group and Fonterra of New Zealand on various sustainability programs.
Mars plans to invest $47 million over three years in the Moo’ving Dairy Forward plan to lessen the carbon footprint of its dairy sourcing. The collaboration with FrieslandCampina will establish the Mars-FrieslandCampina Sustainable Dairy Development Program, focusing on enhancing sustainable practices within dairy farms.
To drive innovation, Mars aims to implement “meaningful on-farm interventions” with industry leaders, focusing on methane reduction, efficient manure management, and sustainable feed production. Amanda Davies, chief R&D, procurement, and sustainability officer at Mars Snacking, emphasized the importance of collaborating with farmers and suppliers to achieve sustainability goals.
Furthermore, Mars has initiated pilot net-zero dairy farms with Germany’s DMK Group to study technology and science for achieving net-zero dairy practices. The company is also exploring sourcing from a seaweed food supplement with Fonterra to potentially reduce cow-generated methane.
As part of its sustainability efforts, Mars recently updated its net-zero roadmap and set a new 2030 target, showcasing the company’s commitment to addressing climate change within the food and beverage industry.
