The Welsh government has released the “Together for Retail: a Wales Retail Forum Action Plan” which outlines key policies aimed at supporting and promoting the retail industry. Championing workforce equality, diversity, and inclusion at all levels is one of the main objectives, alongside embedding fair work principles. In this regard, the plan advocates for the promotion of the Real Living Wage, the Economic Contract, and trade unions.
To promote careers in the retail sector, the plan suggests assessing skills and training provisions while adopting the Town Centre First policy in planning. In doing so, local communities will benefit from the creation of jobs and the reduction of town center vacant premises. To increase footfall, town center or high street events are suggested and encouraged.
Safer working environments and promoting net zero are also some of the ways the Welsh government aims to support the retail sector. The Welsh government has outlined a roadmap for achieving a net-zero economy by 2050, encouraging businesses to take responsibility and play their part in achieving this goal.
Chief Executive of ACS, James Lowman, applauds the plan for its acknowledgment of the vital role convenience stores play in the Welsh economy. He further emphasized the need for continued engagement with the Welsh government through the Retail Forum to outline the unique challenges faced by local shops.
The retail action plan dovetails the Welsh government’s shared strategic vision for the retail sector launched in 2022. As part of the accountability framework, the plan will be reviewed in two years to assess its progress.
Overall, the plan highlights the Welsh government’s commitment to support the retail sector through various initiatives and policies aimed at creating favorable conditions for growth and investment.
