Starting from this date, retailers must immediately cease the sale and distribution of the following single-use plastic products:
- Plates – encompassing paper plates that possess a laminated plastic surface
- Cutlery – such as forks, spoons, and knives
- Drinks stirrers – specifically designed to stir beverages or liquid food
- Cups made of expanded or foamed extruded polystyrene
- Takeaway food containers made of expanded or foamed extruded polystyrene
- Sticks for balloons
- Plastic-stemmed cotton buds
- Drinking straws
It shall be deemed unlawful to either sell or provide any of the aforementioned products to consumers within Wales. With this in mind, the Welsh government is advising businesses to take immediate action and begin preparing for the new legislation. This can be accomplished through means such as reducing stock levels of the aforementioned products, transitioning to reusable alternatives, or, if necessary, exploring the availability of non-plastic single-use alternatives.
In order to facilitate the adjustment process, the government has published comprehensive guidance for businesses, which can be accessed here. For further information on the regulations, you may refer to the government’s webpage, accessible here.
Emphasizing the significance of this development, ACS chief executive James Lowman affirms, “Local shops remain fully committed to making a positive difference within the communities they serve. Over the years, retailers have proactively sought to reduce waste in both their stores and communities.”
He continues, “We strongly urge retailers to familiarize themselves and their colleagues with the published guidance, ensuring their businesses are well-prepared for the impending ban on single-use plastics.”
It is important to note that the ban on single-use plastic products in England will take effect on 1 October 2023.
